What are emotions?

What are emotions? We all have them and have learned about them since kindergarten. Do our students really know how to label their emotions? Do they understand why they get so upset?

Sometimes just labeling emotions isn’t enough. Students need to go deeper to understand why they have emotions and that emotions have an effect on how their bodies feel.

Once students understand how to label emotions and understand what they feel like, they are better able to control their emotions. School can be overwhelming with a barrage of emotions. One minute you are excited and the next minute you feel like your world is going to end. This is confusing for students.

What are emotions? This is an SEL basic to learn how to label emotions and what they feel like.

What’s next?

Once students are able to understand their emotions they are ready to get control of their emotions. They have an upper hand at calming their brains and keeping their emotions under control.

Emotional control is also important for empathy. When you understand how your emotions work you are able to understand how someone else might be feeling.
