How often do you have students bickering in class because they are unable to work in groups? The reality is that group work is not isolated to school but takes place often in the workforce. It is important that we are teaching group work.
Group work is a valuable tool to help students learn from one another. How do we get our students to work well in groups so that they can experience the benefits?
Ways to teach group work.
Practice is always helpful. Just putting students in a group does not count as practice. We need to help them understand the right way to work in a group so that they can practice these techniques.
Teach students to take roles. When students are able to have defined roles they know what to do. When students are learning to work in groups start by defining roles for them. This gives them a defined role and can make group work easier.
Students also need to have a basis for communication skills. These skills are foundational in group work.
