Teaching Students Goal Setting

Goal setting is an important skill for students to learn. It helps them get where they are going, especially when obstacles arise. Teaching students goal-setting techniques should be added to your SEL lessons.

Students that have goals are far more likely to succeed. Goals help students have a sense of purpose and something to work for. This encourages students to have patience and work on skills to delay gratification.

Goals are imperative when it comes to accomplishing big dreams. When students have goals they are able to accomplish whatever they put their minds to.

How to teach goal setting?

To start teaching goal setting help students to figure out their dreams. What do they want to accomplish? This is a great brainstorming activity.

Once students have figured out what they want, help them break that down into defined measurable pieces. Think about SMART goals.

In order for students to succeed once they have their goals, help them to brainstorm roadblocks. If students are aware of common pitfalls then they can prepare and create a plan of action for when they occur.
