Body Image

Just thinking about body image makes us cringe. We cringe when we think about the awkward years growing up. Why did we ever think that looked stylish? We cringe when we think about looking at ourselves in the mirror. We squirm in our chairs when we think about teaching our students how to have a healthy body image.

This topic seems to be similar to walking in a minefield. No one wants to talk about this ever. Yet our students are struggling every day with the way they look. They feel too fat, too skinny, too tall, too short, too mature, not mature enough, funny in their braces, weird in their glasses, and just uncomfortable.

Most students struggle with body image. The struggle is teaching them to have a positive body image. How does this fit into your SEL program?

How to teach body image?

How do we teach our students about having a positive body image without making them feel more uncomfortable? An even bigger question, how do we teach hormonal teenagers and preteens about body image without going down a rabbit hole?

It is simple, have a plan! Stay in control. Don’t beat around the bush. The more uncomfortable you appear, the more your students will lose it. This topic will surely elicit giggles from the peanut gallery and some comments. Great classroom management can put a quash to this.

Most students feel uncomfortable with their bodies. Lead them down a path of positive body image. This doesn’t mean you have to go into the topic of what the most beautiful person looks like and what they wish they could be. Help them to see the beauty within.
