When we take a few minutes to think about it, it is clear that we want students that can lead. How do we continue teaching students leadership? Why is leadership so important?
We want students that can lead the crowd to make positive choices. Students can stand up for what they believe and not be followers. We want students that are capable of leading group work and ultimately able to lead outside of the school setting.
How to Teach Leadership
The first step in teaching leadership is to be a good model. Show students what a good leader looks like. When you are demonstrating these skills don’t be afraid to label and talk about them. This reinforces what you are modeling.
Give students a chance to practice leadership skills. Sometimes students will really struggle with this, other times they might pick it up right away. Offer a safe place for students to practice these skills.
Encourage students as they are learning. We all make mistakes. Learning the skill of leadership often includes making mistakes. This is a great opportunity for students to learn! Give them a place that is safe to learn and make these mistakes as they are learning.
Explore different types of leadership. What does leadership actually look like? Are there different types? What does a good leader look like? What are examples of bad leadership? This is great for students to explore and discuss.
