Inclusive SEL: Engaging Students of All Abilities

The Essential Skills teacher at MVMS is second to none. She will advocate for her students to receive all of the skills and training they need. She pushes for them to be able to do everything their peers are doing. This teacher spends hours a day modifying the curriculum to include her students. Until she found The Mind Trek Program for Special Education! This program does the work for her and is a completely inclusive SEL program.

Her students are now able to learn the same content their peers are doing only modified to their abilities. She uses all three levels with her students at the same time. There are picture supports for students that are unable to read. Students that can read are challenged at their ability level. Everyone is happy.

The Essential Skills class frequently plays games with their peer buddies to reinforce the lessons they are learning. The entire school is learning the same topic during their SEL lessons.

Students are demonstrating their skills

Students are verbalizing their emotions. They are able to calm down on their own with the resources they are learning during their lessons. Students are even able to recognize one another’s emotions and provide support.

The other day when one student was feeling particularly overwhelmed and upset another walked over to provide comfort. She told her, “just take some deep breaths, that will help you feel better.” It wasn’t long before the rest of the class recognized one of their classmates was in need. Soon there was a group hug with all of her students.

It is so amazing to all of the students participating because the curriculum is leveled to their individual ability. On top of that, the entire class is able to participate in the school-wide SEL program. This fits perfectly with her vision to have an inclusive program for her students. Her students love it because they are covering the same topics as their peers and can talk about it with them.
