How to Teach Compromise

When teaching compromise, it is important to start with a foundation. Students need to learn how to communicate with one another.

Teaching empathy helps students understand that there is more in life than their feelings about a situation. Other people have needs, feelings, and wants as well.

Start teaching students conflict resolution skills. Compromise is just one tool in the toolbox for conflict resolution.

Give students the opportunity to compromise. Make lessons and games that require students to compromise to win.

Allow opportunities for students to role-play to practice compromising.

My golden standard of SEL education is to be a model for the skills that you are teaching. Model compromise in the classroom. Perhaps students have been working hard and asking for something you would normally say no to. Compromise with them and walk them through the process as you do it.
